The Trials of Starting Your Own Business

Starting your own business can be easier than you think, as long as you know what to do. Here are some things you must know to have a successful business.

Have you ever sat back and thought, "I could do that," or "If only I were the boss." You can be, but starting your own business can be very scary, but it does not have to be. First, you do not have to quit your day job. There are several ways to go about starting your own business, and here are two examples.

For either technique, use your spare time. Do NOT quit your regular job. The first thing you need to do is call the county clerk. Ask them the rules of acquiring a business license and other fees that might occur BEFORE you start anything. There is usually a grace period and/or quite a bit of money you are allowed to make before you have to report anything, but it's best to know ahead of time.

The first variety is that of services. Services are easy to perform, but require little to no start up costs. Services are not always subject to sales tax, which is another reason to start there. Services include catering, cleaning houses, baby-sitting, tutoring, mowing lawns, and many others. Make sure your service does not require a license to perform in your area. Spend time looking at the ads in papers to decide which one is actually needed. Call around to local companies that perform the service you are interested in and get some comparative rates. You want your prices to be competitive!

The second variety is small items. Make something. Grow something. Some people are good at buying junk and refurbishing it. These items can then be sold in a store that's only open every other Thursday, or a flea market, or a yard sale. The store will make more money, but it will also cost much more to run. You could sell some to local stores who find your wares salable, or will take a percentage to display and sell them.

In business there are legalities. If you are doing services, I highly recommend getting licensed, if possible, insured and bonded no matter what, even if you are just starting. Bonded means that a background check has been done on you, and a bonding company is willing to vouch for you. If you steal something, that company will pay for the items you stole. Licensed (if applicable) will draw more people. Do you trust an unlicensed plumber or electrician? Insured is a must in today's society, as it protect YOU from being sued.

These are the basic building blocks for starting your own business. It can be done if you know what to do.
